DIBRUGARH, March 27 - The credentials of eight candidates in fray for Dibrugarh Lok Sabha seat particularly their educational level vary from PhD to HSLC standard, according to the affidavits disclosed by the contesting candidates.

As per the affidavits put before the poll panel here, three candidates including the sitting MP Rameswar Teli have finished tenth (HSLC) standard only. The other two candidates with HSLC include Israil Nanda (Independent) and Rubul Buragohain (Independent). Former AGP Minister and now NPP candidate Bhaben Baruah has cleared his 12th standard (Pre Degree).

Former Union Minister Paban Singh Ghatowar of the Indian National Congress, Apurba Saikia of Hindusthan Nirman Dal and Independent candidate Md. Nurul Huda Imdadul Islam Saikia have obtained their BA degree.

The Bahujan Mukti Party candidate Dr Titus Bhengra, a retired Professor of the Department of Political Science of DHSK College, happens to be the highly educated among the eight contesting candidates. As per the affidavit put before the poll panel here, Dr Bhengra holds the degree of PhD.

Among the contesting candidates, Ghatowar (67) is the senior most in terms of age and career in politics. He was elected to the Lok Sabha from Dibrugarh five times earlier and also held ministerial berth twice. Rubul Buragohain (43), former president of Ahom Gana Mancha and ex district president of Tai Ahom Chatra Sanstha is the youngest.

Ghtowar is also the richest of all with movable and immovable assets valued at Rs 1,99,82,912.45 and Rs 2,05,00,000.00 respectively. Next richest candidate is the sitting BJP MP Rameswar Teli with gross total of movable assets valued at Rs 18,78,067.00 and immovable assets amounting about Rs 24,44,000.00.

Israil Nanda had contested earlier in 2006 as AGP candidate from Tinsukia assembly constituency. Similarly, Bhaben Baruah and Dr Titus Bhengra too had contested earlier as AGP candidate and Samata Party candidate respectively. In this context Md Nurul Huda Imdadul Islam Saikia, Apurba Saikia and Rubul Buragohain are practically novice in politics.

Bhaben Baruah happens to be the only candidate against whom police case (Dibrugarh PS. 299/2008, Special Case No. 5/2014, Special Judge, Kamrup, Gauhati) under Section 342/506/384/120/468/34 IPC is pending, as per his affidavit.
