Three jail staff suspended

IMPHAL, Oct 19 - Three staff of the Sajiwa Central Jail, including the head warder, were suspended for their alleged involvement in the handcuffing of a Manipur University teacher while producing him for medical check-up at a government hospital on October 11, sources said.

Additional Director General (Prisons) P Doungel issued an official order in this regard on Tuesday. But it was made available to the media on Thursday. .

The order said the three jail staff have been placed under suspension with immediate effect as disciplinary proceedings are contemplated against them. It also barred the suspended staff from leaving their headquarters without prior information to the superintendent of the jail.

Six teachers, along with seven other students of the Manipur University, were picked up from various places after the police conducted a raid on the varsity hostels in the intervening night of September 20 and 21 on the basis of a complaint. They were lodged at the Sajiwa Central Jail.

Reports claimed that one of the teachers was brought to the JNIMS Hospital here for medical examination with his hands cuffed by the jail staff on October 11, which evoked sharp reactions from the Manipur University community.
