Three held in Panikhaiti robbery case

GUWAHATI, Aug 7 - Police have so far arrested three persons in connection with the robbery at a couple�s residence at Panikhaiti on Sunday night.

One Gopal Sonar was arrested from that locality. He claimed to be a grass-cutter and is known to the couple in whose residence the robbery took place.

Following further investigation two more persons were arrested late in the night. The second accused is Abdul Salem who hails from Chayygaon, and the third Basiruddin Sheikh. Sheikh was arrested from Hatigaon.

�House-breaking implements and rods used in commission of the crime were recovered from the house of Sheikh. Certain items used by the criminals were also found from Abdul,� Noonmati ACP Purabi Mazumdar said, adding that investigations are on in full swing.

Without revealing much, police sources said more arrests would follow. Around five masked criminals, reportedly carrying weapons, had barged into the residence of the couple at Panikhaiti and looted cash and valuables worth several lakhs on Sunday night.

The owner of the house Ritu Mahanta (60), an engineer by profession, was reportedly tied up by the robbers before they looted the valuables, including jewellery which Mahanta and his wife were wearing.
