Three held, cash seized in Nagaon

NAGAON, April 17 - A Flying Squad team and Nagaon town police led by SI Gaurov Mahanta in a joint drive Monday night arrested three suspected workers of a political party for flouting the model code of conduct and also seized a cash of around Rs 14.9 lakh from them when they were taking shelter in a hotel situated at Haiborgaon in Nagaon town. The cash was kept in some envelopes and it is suspected that the envelopes were supposed to be distributed among voters.

According to sources, the district election authority had specific information about the cash and directed the Flying Squad team as well as the police administration to act against the political party workers. Following the directives of the district election authority, the Flying Squad and Nagaon town police began the search operation and finally got the breakthrough. The teams of Flying Squad and police department traced the three workers in a hotel at Haiborgaon. When the police and Flying Squad raided the hotel room, they found the cash kept in some small envelopes. Police later seized the entire cash and also detained the trio.

According to sources, the detained workers have been identified as Jiten Goswami of Fauzdaripatty in Nagaon, Shakil Akhtar of Margherita and Arindam Kakoti of Chandmari Milanpur in Guwahati. Interestingly, Nagaon police released all the next morning on bail, a police source added.
