Three govt offices burnt down in Manipur

IMPHAL, Aug 4 � Three government offices and two more four wheelers including a car, a maruti van and a pulsar motorcycle were set on fire on the fourth day of the week-long economic blockade on the two National Highways 39 and 53 that connects the State with the rest of the country.

Sadar Hills District-hood Demand Committee (SHDDC) which had been imposing the economic blockade on the highways from July 31 midnight demanding creation of Sadar Hills area under Senapati district into a full-fledged revenue district, has subsequently called indefinite bandh in Sadar Hills.

The offices burnt down by the suspected blockade supporters include offices of the Sub-Divisional Officer, Sarva Siksha Abhiyan and Public Health Engineering Department offices under Kangpokpi police station in Manipur�s Senapati district.

The Maruti Swift car was burnt down late last night while another Maruti van and a Pulsar motorcycle were also torched during the day.Three goods laden trucks were also burnt down on Wednesday.

With the imposition of the indefinite bandh in the Sadar Hills area which falls under the two highways, many Imphal- bound passengers coming from various parts of the country were stranded at Senapati district headquarter since Wednesday.

Some of them have been sleeping inside their respective tourist buses while some have stayed in the hotels of the hill station,60 km north of Imphal.

�Local bodies in association with the district administration is planning to arrange foods and shelter for the stranded passengers numbering more than 300,� a resident of Senapati district headquarter said on phone.
