Three-cornered contest likely in Dharmapur

By The Assam Tribune

Tihu, March 10: The 61 no Dharmapur constituency of Nalbari district which is considered as an most important LAC of Assam is likely to witness a three cornered fight among Bharatiya Janata Party( BJP), Congress and the newly formed Asom Jatiya Parishad(AJP). The constituency has 1,40,486 voters.

In the last Assembly election, Chandra Mohan Patowary, the now Industry Minister of Assam from BJP in direct fight defeated Nilamani Sen Deka of Congress while in 2011, Nilamani Sen Deka captured the seat.

But this time the BJP aspirant Chandra Mohan Patowary, a senior minister of Assam government along with ticket aspirants Jyotirmoy Sarma from BJP are likely to face a tough contest with the Asom Jatiya Parishad candidate, educationist and professor of Gauhati University, Dr Sikhar Kr Sarma and Congress aspirants Nilamani Sen Deka, Ratul Patowary and Diganta Bhusan Barman.

Dr Sikhar Kr Sarma who has been projected as AJP candidate in this LAC, and who is popular among youngsters, has already started his election campaign through a huge bike rally from Nalbari to his birth place Barnarddi with an aim of giving a tough challenge to the saffron party candidates and Congress party.

The existence of other regional parties like AGP, Raijor Dal including left parties appear very negligible in the constituency. Previously, this important seat was won by Chandra Mohan Patowary in 1986, 1991, 1996 and in 2006.

On the other hand, the young educated youths and the conscious people of greater Kaithalkuchi area are not happy with the development carried out by Chandra Mohan Patowary who represented the LAC 5 times as AGP, Swatantra Mancha and BJP candidate. They said that all the roads leading to Kaithalkuchi have been in a dilapidated state. After all, Kaithakuchi has been far from development. The youngsters are also lacking a suitable playground.

Inspite of all the issues, the BJP aspirants are hopeful of winning the seat. Again, the beneficiary schemes will also play a vital role in winning this election. However, the odds indicate that there will be three cornered fight in Dharmapur constituency.
