Three children washed away in floods

GUWAHATI, Sep 17 (PTI): At least three children were washed away in the swirling water of the Brahmaputra in Nalbari district of Assam even as the overall flood situation remained unchanged with over five lakh people affected in 11 districts.

Official sources said Jamila Khatun (3), Basiran Begum (5) and Nilima Khatun (8) were washed away by the turbulent Brahmputra river at Tilardia Char area under Barkeshetri revenue circle last night.

Meanwhile the flood situation in the state remained unchanged with the Brahmaputra and its tributaries submerging huge areas of human habitation and crop land and affecting more than five lakh people.

The situation in Barak valley was serious as the rivers Barak and Kushiara created havoc and submerged many villages.

Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj district administration have stepped up relief and rescue measures to ensure there was no loss to human lives.
