Thousands to run in Guwahati Marathon

GUWAHATI, Sept 26 � Organisers Lions Club International, District 322 D are expecting around 10,000 runners, including some State and national athletes, in the Guwahati Marathon to be held here on October 2. The Marathon, billed as �Run for Peace�, will be flagged off by Meghalaya Governor RS Mooshahary at Latasil playground at 7 am. The 6.5 km race will end at the Dispur playground.

Giving details about the competition, Pankaj Poddar, coordinator said in a press conference here today, the runners will run through Lamb Road, Guwahati Club, Ulubari, Bhangagarh and Ganeshguri. The marathon will send a message of peace to the nation on the birth anniversary of father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi. He further revealed that the CRPF will man the starting and finishing points. CRPF personnel will also provide medical and other support to the runners if required.

Jaiswal said they have sent invitations to all the city based clubs, associations and other organisations for the competition where the champion will get Rs 21,000. The second and third position holders will get Rs 11,000 and Rs 5,000 respectively. The prize and certificate distribution function will be held at the Dispur playground at 10 am. Kingfisher, Saiji TMT Bar, Topchem Cement and some other business houses will sponsor the event. Other members of the organising committee like Rajesh Agarwal, JP Jaswal, Rajesh Agarwal, Amar Baruah, Abhijit Roy, PK Gupta and Vinod Keyal were also present in the press conference.
