Thousands take part in SAG Torch Relay

GUWAHATI, Jan 22 - The Run for North East and the Torch Relay was organised here today along with the launching of the recomposed version of Dr Bhupen Hazarika�s immortal creation Ei Prithibi Ek Krirangon as the theme song for the South Asian Games (SAG) .

The theme song is sung by Mayukh Hazarika, the nephew of the legendary Dr Bhupen Hazarika along with eight children representing all the eight languages of the participating countries of the 12th South Asian Games.

The Torch Relay was flagged off by the Union Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal at the Sonaram Field in the morning and culminated at the RG Baruah Sports Complex covering five kilo metres.

Thousands of people, mostly students, volunteers and security personals, took part in the relay along with eminent sports personalities including the likes of Arjuna awardee Bhogeshwar Baruah, Padmashri Kunjarani Devi, Mithu Barua, Madhurjya Barua, Gilbertson Sangma, Elvis Ali Hazarika, Promila Bharali, Lalremsanga, Tayabun Nisha, Kushal Lahon among others.

State Sports Minister Ajit Singh was also present during the ceremony.

The Run for North East is being organised for creating awareness for the upcoming SAG to be jointly hosted by Guwahati and Shillong.

A colourful cultural function was held at the Nehru Stadium after completion of �The Run for North East�. Noted artistes of the State including Bornali Kalita, Barsha Rani Bishaya, Nishita Goswami, Shyamontika, Dikshu also performed during the occasion.

The 12th SAG is scheduled to be held from February 5 to 16. The torch will now travel to all the eight States of the North East India.
