Thousands protest against CAA at Dergaon

DERGAON, Dec 25 - Around 20,000 people of the greater Brahmaputra area of Dergaon in Golaghat district took part in a massive protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) on Tuesday.

The residents of the flood-prone areas assembled at Swahid Kamala Miri Kshetra near Khakandaguri High School, 15 km from Dergaon town, to take part in a protest against the CAA. The protesters shouted slogans against the BJP government and demanded immediate scrapping of the Act.

The protest titled �Brahmaputrar Gonogorjon� was held from 10 am to 4 pm and was addressed by artistes like Mahendra Hazarika, Bipin Chaudang, Nayan Nirban, Biswajit Bora, etc.

All Golaghat District Students� Association adviser Mridul Saikia, labour leader Soneswar Narah, advocate Bhaskar Bhuyan, Takam Mising Porin Kebang (TMPK) leader Prasanta Loying, Prasanta Neog of Srimanta Sankar Sangha, and several students spoke on the occasion.

All the speakers expressed anger against the controversial legislation and demanded immediate scrapping of the CAA.

Singer Bipin Chaudang said the government offered a �bribe� of Rs 50,000 to the artiste fraternity, which was refused by the artistes. �I will give Rs 1 lakh to the government if they scrap the CAA,� he said.

Mridul Saikia said the development work announced by the state government was being done with the public�s fund and was �not being spent from their pockets�.

The gathering announced a ban on the entry of local BJP MLA Mrinal Saikia as well as Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in the region.

Speakers at the protest also announced that the name of the Chief Minister was withdrawn from the golden jubilee celebration of Nabhanga High School. The residents also announced an indefinite protest till the Act is scrapped.
