DHUBRI, Nov 16 - The mortal remains of Havaldar Haradhan Chandra Roy, who lost his life on November 13 during multiple ceasefire violations by Pakistani troops along the Line of Control in the Uri sector of Jammu and Kashmir, were consigned to flames on Monday, with thousands of people from all over the district as well as from the neighbouring areas flocking in to pay their last respects and participate in the last rites.
Roy�s body reached his native village of Medipara under Futkibari gaon panchayat of Bilasipara subdivision at Dhubri district this morning around 8 am, from Srinagar via Guwahati, accompanied by hundreds of youths from the district who shouted slogans praising the braveheart, while condemning the cowardly act of Pakistani troops.
Thirtynine-year-old Roy was a cadre of 59 Artillery Regiment of the Indian Army. He joined the Army in 2001 and was transferred to Kashmir from Punjab about two months ago. The martyr leaves behind his septuagenarian father Tankeswar Roy, wife Bakul, his two-year-old son Ayush, besides three younger sisters.
Food and Civil Supplies Minister Phani Bhushan Choudhury, State BJP president Ranjit Kumar Dass, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee vice president Wajed Ali Choudhary and members of their respective parties also visited the cremation ground to pay their tributes to the jawan. Officials of the district administration, police, Army, BSF and other organisations, members of student bodies and socio-cultural organisations as well as senior citizens also thronged the ground and paid tributes to the mortal remains in the wreath-laying ceremony.
Before the cremation, Army personnel fired 21 rounds in the air to accord full military honour to Roy for his supreme sacrifice.
