Thieves continue stealing spree in Jorhat

JORHAT, Feb 3 - Thieves continued with their burglary spree in Jorhat town by committing theft in five shops along the Bagmibor Nilomoni Phukan Road (popularly known as Fish Market Road) in the heart of the town on Friday night.

This is second such incident within a span of three days with nine shops burgled on the night of January 29 in three different locations of the town.

On January 29, State Assembly Speaker and Jorhat MLA Hitendra Nath Goswami had launched 'Project Third Eye' at the Jorhat Police Station under which 32 CCTV cameras were installed at several prominent places of the town.

A police source here stated that the burgled shops on Friday night sold grocery items, tea, medicines and stationery material. Thieves decamped with cash and some items.

It may be mentioned here that on the night of January 22, nine shops were burgled in Bongalpukhuri and Jail Road areas of the town. Again, during the first half of January, seven shops were burgled in the Tarajan locality.

On Friday night, a red-coloured Hero Splendour motorbike owned by Ankur Sarma of Uttar Sarbaibandha here was reportedly stolen from the premises of a private wedding hall near the Inter-State Bus Terminus here.

In the meantime, Jorhat Police on Saturday arrested six youths in the age group of 18 to 20 years on charges of committing theft in the town. The group included two youths from Nagaon district, one each from Mangaldai and Golaghat districts, one from Bihar and one from Rajamaidam New Colony here.

A police source in the Jorhat Police Station said that a few stolen ornaments were recovered from the possession of the arrested persons.

The arrested youths are Amir Ali, Sukkur Ali (both from Nagaon), Atabur Ali (Jorhat), Inamul Hussain (Mangaldai), Nabajit Borah ( Bokakhat sub-division of Golaghat) and Chandal Mandol from Madhubani district of Bihar respectively.
