Thieves break into Siva Doul, Bishnu Doul

SIVASAGAR, April 15 - Residents of Sivasagar woke up on the morning of the very first day of the Assamese New Year on April 14 to the shocking news that thieves had broken into the historic Siva Doul and Bishnu Doul, considered to be the nerve centre of the temple township, the previous night and took away a huge amount of money from three donation boxes kept inside the temples.

The thieves broke the heavy iron boxes when there was no security around, the Temple Development Committee said due to the nationwide lockdown. Sivasagar Police, however, swung into action as soon as it was reported and nabbed three thieves within 24 hours. The thieves, the OC Sivasagar PS informed were Raja Duwora, Naren Dutta and Hafijur Ali,and all of them were confirmed criminals. Rs 3200 was recovered from their possession.

The Doul Development Committee told media that there was a huge amount of money in the donation boxes kept inside the douls � two in the historic Siva Doul and one in the Bishnu Doul� which had not been opened since three months back. The CCTV cameras, installed in the campus were not functioning as the Archaeological Department has been conducting gardening works around the temple which had snapped the underground connection cables.
