GUWAHATI, Dec 14 - The 39th annual general meeting of the Assam Theosophical Federation was held at Pensioners� Bhawan here on Wednesday with DN Chakravartty in the chair.
General secretary of the federation Anil Kumar Baruah, in his report, said that Assam has the largest number of theosophical lodges and members among all the states in eastern India.
Jatindranath Patowary, president of the reception committee, in his welcome address, dwelt on the role of theosophy in promoting brotherhood among nations and understanding among religions.
Several members including Dharanidhar Kalita, Dr Chandraprabha Bhuyan, Gokul Deka and Raghunath Choudhury, in their speeches, stressed the need for enlisting youths and students as members of the theosophical society.
Chakravartty, in his presidential remarks, said that mankind could be saved from future disasters through promotion of the idea of brotherhood of nations as adumbrated by the founder fathers of theosophical society.
In the open session, Prof Mohibuddin Ahmed gave a talk on comparative study of religions and humanism on the basis of theosophy.
A new executive committee was formed with Nagendra Chandra Dutta as president, Dr Chandraprabha Bhuyan as general secretary, Gopi Chandra Deka, Dr Bipul Sarma and Dhireswar Sarma as vice presidents and Mahendranath Sarma as joint secretary. Ila Sarma and Jagannath Patgiri are the librarian and the editor respectively.
