SILCHAR, April 27 - Noted theatre personality of Barak Valley Chameli Kar passed way on Thursday night at 9:55 pm. She was 79.
Popular as Chameli di among her colleagues and well-wishers, the veteran actor was keeping indifferent health for quite sometime now. Kar was a familiar face in the theatre revolution in southern Assam and earned accolades and awards with her exemplary performances.
Hugely popular, she was also one of the eyewitnesses of the historic Language Movement of 1961 and a frontline leader of the subsequent protests and movements that were held in connection with the issue.
People from different theatre organisations joined the funeral of Kar today and paid their last tributes to the departed actor.
She was subsequently cremated at the Silchar crematorium. Her demise was widely mourned.
