GUWAHATI, March 2 - A five-day theatre festival Pragjyotish, being organised by the National School of Drama (NSD) in collaboration with Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra is currently under way in the city.

Meenai, a play directed by Ranabir Khoisnam and written by Mahasweta Devi, was staged on Saturday. Traditional dances and folk performances are also being staged for the audience every evening.

An inaugural function was held on Friday where eminent theatre artiste Dulal Roy was the chief guest, actor Pranjal Saikia was the guest of honour and Sudarshan Thakur was the special guest. The function was presided over by NSD associate professor Hema Singh.

Theatre aims at uniting individuals and we have spread the celebration to endorse theatre at a regional level with the goal to reach out to increasing number of individuals. Pragjyotish will be an effective celebration, drawing in a tonne of crowd, NSD acting chairman Dr Arjun Deo Charan said.

NSD director in-charge Suresh Sharma added, The festival will focus on providing an engaging audience experience. NSD has been organising theatre fiestas in the North East for a long time. Earlier, it was known as Purvotar Natya Samaroh, but keeping in mind the ancient name of the North East, we have renamed the festival as Pragjyotish.
