Thai team to present Bihu-like dance forms

GUWAHATI, March 20 � This Bihu, people of Assam would be exposed to something new and unique. For, Thailand, for the first time, would be exporting two of its oldest dance forms that draw sharp resemblance with Bihu dance.

Amidst belief that Bihu dance had its roots in these two dance forms of Mingmoi province of Thailand, popular music director of Assam, Manas Robin vows to take both the dance forms in Tai Khiwai and Moon Khrung throughout the length and breadth of the State in the span of over two months.

�I was amazed to find such resemblance in these dance forms with the Bihu dance. Even the beats that they tap their feet sound identical, besides the instrumentation. This is why I decided to bring both the forms of Tai dance before the people in Assam,� Manas Robin said during a press conference here today.

The music director also informed that he came across the idea for the first time during the making of a documentary movie titled Tai People of the North East, which has already hit the floor.

He informed that the Thai dance group would be performing across the State under �Manas Robin�s Jatra�, an annual cultural tour which begins from April 14.

The six-member Thai dance group is expected to arrive in the State in first week of April.

�I am confident that people will love the experience that is coming their way and hoping that this would be a new beginning to a fruitful cultural exchange between the State and Thailand,� he said.

Actor Nayan Nilim, flautist Parmeswar Basumatary, musician Simanta Phukan besides others will be the part of the cultural tour.
