By Correspondent

GOLAKGANJ, May 3 The Dhubri fisheries department on Saturday seized 20,000 seedlings of Thai magur, a banned carnivorous, predatory and cannibalistic fish variety, which was to be sold in the open market in Dhubri town.

Mukut Sarma, Assistant Fishery Information Officer, Dhubri and Mahbubur Rahman, Fishery Extension Officer, Dhubri had provided the information that the banned fish was being transported to South Salmara-Mankachar markets from Dhubri. The officials of Dhubri fishery department later conducted an operation at Jogmaya Ghat and seized the seedlings.

Sarma said that in spite of the ban imposed by the Government of Assam on its cultivation, Thai magur is still being caught and sold in the markets. He said that in the past couple of months the fisheries department had stepped up its campaign to prevent sale of the banned variety and had so far seized several quintals in the district alone.
