Tezpur wears festive look as Durga Puja celebrations begin

TEZPUR, Sept 26 - Tezpur town wore a festive look as altogether 190 Durga Puja committees started Puja celebrations from today with eye-catching decoration of their pandals attracting hundreds of devotees from every walk of life.

Maintaining the tradition, a good number of Puja committees including oldest family Puja of Mukherjee family near Tezpur Police station here, Puja of Gangacharan Bhattacharya of Kolibari, Gangaram Das of Tol Gereki area, Mohadev Sharma (who started the Puja inside Tezpur Jail during the Quit India Movement), the 49-year-old Durga Puja of Iswar Prashad Chowdhury at Ganeshghat, have been trying to attract Puja revellers with unique decoration.

Besides these, the Rudrapal Samittee Durga Puja, the community puja performed jointly by the Bengali and Assamese people which has been going on since 1895 at the Bengali Theatre Hall, the Ban Theatre Durga Puja that started in 1909, the Kamrupia Sanatan Dharma Mandali Puja that has been celebrated since 1928, the old Ban Theatre Durga Puja at Kolibari, Marwari Panchayat Dharmashala Durga Puja, Ram Krishna Sevasram Durga Puja, Mahabhairab Haribilash Durga Puja, Rubber Bagan Chandimandap Durga Puja, Madhya Para Dakhina Kali Mandir Durga Puja, Bhairab Nagar Tila Durga Puja, Nepali Patti-Madhya Tezpur Yubak Sangha Durga Puja, Lambudar Bora Road community Durga Puja, Barahalia Ajanta Club Durga Puja, Amullapatti Durga Puja by Friends Club, Tinmail Uriamguri Durga Puja, Jahaghat Hindustani Durga Puja, Kocharigaon Durga Puja, Kamarchuburi Durga Puja, Chanmari Durga Puja, Dadhora Bamunchuburi Durga Puja, Kumargaon Durga Puja, Murhateteli Durga Puja, Cotton Road Durga Puja, Luitpar Durga Puja, Mission Chariali Durga Puja, Balipukhuri Tiniali Durga Puja, 102 year-old Dipota Kendryia Natya Mandir Durga Puja and Milonpur Durga Puja committees have completed all preparations for the celebrations.

The district administration has urged all concerned, including the Puja committees and the common citizens, to extend their cooperation so that during the festival no untoward incident takes place.

Since there are a total of 380 Puja mandaps in Sonitpur district including 190 Pujas in Tezpur town, the District administration here has taken some special measures. In a press meet held here this afternoon, Deputy Commissioner Manuj Kumar Deka said that for maintaining cleanliness in the town he has directed all the Puja committees to put up dustbins and provide safe drinking water for the Puja revellers.

Moreover as the Bijoya Dasami day coincides with Sankar Utsav, the administration has directed all Puja committees to finish the immersion ceremony by 8 pm.

�Since the day after the Bijoya Dasami is Muharram, the use of high-pitch sound system is strictly prohibited,� he added and greeted all on the occasion of Durga Puja with an appeal to celebrate the Puja peacefully.
