TEZPUR, Jan 25 � The six- day-long Tezpur Book Fair held here at the Sahitya Sabha Bhawan ended on January 22 with various events.
The book fair was organised by the Tezpur Book Fair 2014, organising committee in cooperation with the Sonitpur district administration. Temporary booths were set up in the book fair in which more than twenty publishing companies from across the State including famous firms like Dutta Baruah, Satirtha (Gyan Yatra), Educational Trust (Guwahati) Gyanjyoti Prakashan, Arunodoi (Grantha Prithbi), Bani Mandir, Publication Board of Assam, Spondon, Satsori, Alibat, Pahi, Prabah etc., participated and sold their books among the readers.
The book fair organised in connection with the 150th birth anniversary of Sahityarathi Lakshminath Bezbaroa started with the paying of rich tributes to the great Assamese literary icon on January 17 at 8.30 am. This was followed by inauguration of the book fair by noted litt�rateur, Dr Arupa Patangya Kalita. This event was graced by Professor Madan Sharma, Tezpur University, Registrar of Tezpur University, Dr Biren Das and DFO, Sonitpur, Narayan Mahanta. In the evening, a cultural nite was held in memory of Rupkonwar Jyotiprasad Agarwala which was widely appreciated. On January 18, art competition, competitions on spelling and vocabulary-meaning among the students, interaction among the literature pension holders and cultural programmes were organised.
On January 19 from 10 am to 2 pm, a poetry recitation competition and a quiz competition with the subject �Sahityarathir Jiban Aru Kirti� was held among the students. In the evening, a face-to-face programme was organised among noted litterateurs namely Dr Mridusmita Phukan, Sahitya Akademi Award winner of 2013 in Boro language, Sansumoi Khungri Basumatary and Bhuban Bora.
Speaking on the occasion, Sansumoi Khungri Basumatary observed that literature reflects the innermost things of the society and it helps in strengthening the bond of the relationship among human beings. �The future of the present-day society is at a great stake as negative things like ruthlessness, mercilessness, evil things etc., have begun to pervade our society,� she said adding that it is time for all to fight against those evil things so that our following generations can avail a better environment to live a hazard-free life.
Dr Mridusmita Phukan and Bhuban Bora along with other dignitaries also spoke on the occasion. This programme was followed by a cultural function. On January 20, a multilingual poets� meet was organised at the venue wherein poets recited poetry in various languages like Boro, Assamese, Sadri, Nepali, Bangla, Hindi etc. On January 21, a competition on the State anthem O Mur Apunar Desh was held among the students.
The book fair concluded on January 22 with prize distribution among the competitors and cultural programme.
