Temporary ISRO complex at GU ahead of permanent centre in North Guwahati

NEW DELHI, June 14 - Ahead of establishing a permanent ISRO centre in North Guwahati, the State government and the Centre are likely to ink a pact to set up a temporary complex at the Gauhati University.

Disclosing this, Minister for Water Resources, Science and Technology and IT of Assam Keshab Mahanta said that he had called on five union ministers connected with his ministry.

Mahanta said they held discussions with Space Minister Dr Jitendra Singh regarding setting up of an ISRO centre in the State. �We have procured 15 bighas of land in North Guwahati for the purpose,� he informed.

But before setting up of a permanent complex, a preliminary complex will be constructed at Gauhati University, he added. �We have procured the land in Gauhati University complex and got Rs 20 lakh from the Shillong-based Space Centre,� informed Mahanta.

�A draft MoU for setting up an ISRO centre is being readied. Today we discussed it in detail and a final shape has been given,� said Mahanta. �We also called on Telecom and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad. We have requested him to upgrade the IT facilities to 4G,� he further said.

�In case of water resources, we called on Union Minister for Jal Shakti Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, who assured us that he would clear all the pending dues. He has requested us to make the necessary budgetary provisions,� said Mahanta. He said that he had reiterated the demand for declaring flood in Assam as a national problem.

�We have also requested Culture Minister Prahlad Singh Patel to ensure preservation of ancient monuments as per the provisions of the Assam Accord. The Minister has directed his officials to get the matter examined,� he said. �We discussed all relevant issues with the new government at the Centre in detail and hope to get necessary cooperation,� he added.
