NAGAON, Nov 19 - Following the dismantling of a Shiva temple at roadside on the old NH near the Morigaon bus stand at Haiborgaon area last night, thousand of irate Hindus disciples today went on a rampage and blocked the road for several hours. The irate disciples alleged that the concerned contractor dismantled the temple without prior information to the temple management committee.

They said that as per traditional Hindu customs, a temple should be dismantled only after following some rituals. But the contractor dismantled the temple without following any such rituals and also vandalised the linga. Similarly, various accessories of the temple, made of gold and silver were thrown away indiscriminately.

Meanwhile, top police officials of the district, a magistrate and the local MLA, Rupak Sarma rushed to the spot and tried to bring the situation under control. Sarma persuaded the gathering to disperse after promising to provide a separate spot for setting up the temple near the Haiborgaon bazaar itself.

It may be mentioned that the Shiva temple named Panchamukh Shiva Mandir was set up 23 years ago on the roadside. But when the district administration decided to extend and widen the old NH from Dimu to Uriagaon Chariali through Nagaon town under an ongoing project, the concerned department was instructed to dismantle various temples on the roadside and the concerned management committees of those temples too expressed their consent to dismantle those temples.
