Telemedicine centre for COVID patients in Cachar

SILCHAR, Aug 17 - To assist COVID-19 patients in home isolation with medical aid and counselling, the Cachar district administration has opened a telemedicine centre at the SM Dev Civil Hospital.

Inaugurating the centre, Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli said, �COVID-19 patients in home isolation often seek doctors� advice on what to do and what medication to take. The new centre will help patients get prompt response to their queries.�

Joint Director of Health Services Dr SJ Das, Dr JH Hazari, Dr Rajat Deb and Dr SK Roy � from SM Dev Civil Hospital � and District Media Expert Suman Choudhury were present.

Visit by cardiologist: Following rising public demand for a cardiologist at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH), the government has approved visits thrice a month by eminent cardiologist Dr Rakesh P Gopal from Apollo Hospitals, Chennai.

Sharing this information with The Assam Tribune, Saumitra Shankar Choudhury, a member of Thousand Sayantans group said, �We lost 25-year-old Sayantan Chakraborty due to lack of cardiac treatment at the SMCH in October 2019. Thereafter, we led a movement so that no other person suffers from such a fate.�

The group thanked Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Padma Shri Dr R Ravi Kannan who introduced them and the SMCH authorities to Dr Gopal.

Sources at the SMCH said that in a letter to the Director of Medical Education on August 14, Khainindra Choudhury, additional secretary to the Health and Family Welfare Department, approved the services of Dr Gopal. The letter, however, mentioned that the travelling expenses shall have to be borne by the SMCH and the approval for an initial period of three months may be extended depending on the report of the principal-cum-chief superintendent of the hospital.
