Teer racket busted in Dhubri

DHUBRI, July 26 - In a crackdown against teer betting in Dhubri district, 9 persons were apprehended by police from different locations over last 24 hours.

Two teer coupon sellers, namely, Bappi Sarkar and Jamiruddin SK were apprehended from Asarikandi Bazar on July 25 in a raid conducted by Gauripur PS. Subsequently, a case was registered (no. 863/18) at Gauripur PS, u/s 14/15 of Assam Gambling and Betting Act 1985 and the accused were forwarded to judicial custody on Wednesday.

On the same day, police also raided the Gauripur market and apprehended one teer bookie Manik Ray with used teer books and other materials related to gambling and three persons, namely, Sayed Ali, Fazlul Haque and Nur Hussain were apprehended from a teer counter at Goi Bazar under Gauripur PS. It was informed that Sayed Ali was caught red-handed while selling teer tickets.

Meanwhile, a raid was conducted on Tuesday evening by a team lead by DYSP (P) Pranjal Bora and OC Agomoni PS SI Dipak Das at Kaldoba Pt II and three persons, namely, Soban Ali, Mojahidul Haq and Aminur Islam were apprehended. A large number of teer books, registers, month-wise charts, two calculators, four mobile phones and cash worth Rs 5,500 were recovered from their possession. It was also informed that they were apprehended at the location of main bookie�s residence.

Police said that a huge network of teer gamblers is active in the district and it has access to every nook and corners of the district. It was also informed that teer betting in the district has been prevalent since long and to completely eradicate it, a mass awareness drive among people is needed.
