Teer, gambling on the rise at Azara

By Correspondent

AZARA, May 1 Teer and gambling dens have mushroomed, leading to a rise in illegal activities here and the adjoining areas.

Gambling activities have been going on in the market areas at Azara, Dharapur, Borjhar, Kahikuchi, Garal, Mazirgaon, etc., under the Azara Police Station. The involvement of youths, particularly students, has become a cause of serious concern. It may be noted here that such activities also lead to untoward incidents.

It is surprising that in spite of the existence of the police station at Azara and a police outpost at Borjhar, no step has been taken so far to check gambling.

Local residents have rued the negligence of the police in this connection. They said that even after repeated complaints, the police have done nothing so for. The local people also alleged that the gambling dens have been rising due to a nexus between the police and the gamblers. The gamblers and teer bookies are paying a huge amount of money to the police, they alleged.

The local people have urged the Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup (M) and the Commissioner of Police, Guwahati, to take measures to halt such illegal activities in the greater interest of the society.
