Technology prog helps to reap record toria crop

NALBARI, March 18 � The technology showcasing programme which was initiated by the Assam Agricultural University (AAU) since 2010 has produced encouraging results in Nalbari district this year.

During 2014-15, the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) of Nalbari in collaboration with the local Department of Agriculture and farmers in PPP mode undertook a seed production programme of toria variety-TS-36 in an area of 70 hectares covering villages Pandula, Samarkuchi, Mugkuchi, Chandkuchi, Chengnoi, Mukalmua, Panigaon, Bali, Bormurikona, Nakharapaka, Kowerhagi and Nathkuchi, among others.

The programme involved scientific production technologies for raising toria crop. Dr Om Prakash, Deputy Commissioner of Nalbari along with the District Agriculture Officer MP Rownier, i/c SDAO of Tihu, Umesh Deka, District Information Officer H Kalita and Dr Mridul Deka, Programme Coordinator of KVK, Nalbari visited the toria fields during harvesting at Nathkuchi 2 and Kaurehagi villages recently.

He expressed satisfaction over the crop yield and encouraged the famers to spread the seeds among their colleagues so as to be able to increase overall production in the district. He provided valuable suggestions to the farmers to use and sell the produce, as well as for seed purpose. He also urged the respective KVK and DAO to take all possible initiatives to collect the high quality certified seeds of toria locally for the purpose of use in the entire district.

The expected quantity of production of around 700 quintals of toria from the 70 hectare area will fulfil the seed requirement of the entire Nalbari district. This programme will immensely help in the horizontal spread of quality seeds within the district as well as in all the nearby districts.

Deben Thakuria and Mahendra Deka; farmers from Kaurehagi and Manik Das from Nathkuchi 2 expressed their gratitude to the KVK and DAO of Nalbari, besides the Deputy Commissioner of Nalbari for undertaking the programme in their area.
