Technical panel to study Subansiri dam: PM

By The Assam Tribune

ON BOARD AIR INDIA - ONE, Oct 30 Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh today said that a technical committee would study the under-construction Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project (LSHEP) and if any flaws are detected, the committee would try to rectify them.

The Prime Minister who was addressing mediapersons on board Air India Special Flight on his way back to Delhi after his week-long visit to Japan, Malaysia and Vietnam, was specifically asked for his comments on the ongoing protests in Assam against the mega-dam project for the impact it would have on the plains of Assam.

I dont study dams. A technical committee will see if there are any flaws in construction of the dam and will try to rectify them, Dr Singh said replying to the question.

On his talks with Prime Minister Wen Jiabao of China yesterday in Hanoi, Dr Singh said both sides agreed that there should be peace and tranquility on the border and that misunderstandings should be removed.

The Chinese Premiers visit to India later this year would go a long way in removing misunderstandings, Dr Singh added.
