Tearful farewell to Rameswar Pathak

GUWAHATI, Dec 4 � The mortal remains of cultural icon Rameswar Pathak were consigned to flames at the Navagraha cremation ground in the presence of large audience including members of the cultural fraternity, who turned up to pay their last tribute to the departed soul. The funeral pyre was lit by the eldest son of the maestro around 3:20 pm.

The body of the eminent folk singer, who breathed his last on Friday at GNRC hospital, was earlier taken to Arya Vidyapeeth Higher Secondary School, Jyoti Chitraban, Sankardev Kalakshetra, Doordarshan Kendra, Guwahati, All India Radio, Guwahati, Ravindra Bhawan and Swahid Nyas, where floral tributes were paid to the departed soul by a large number of music lovers.

Among the distinguished personalities who turned up at the cremation ground include veteran singer Khagen Mahanta, AASU adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya and public activist Deven Dutta.

Prominent singers like Kula Barua, JP Das and Angarag Mahanta also turned up at the cremation ground apart from a host of other noted personalities.

�His death has caused an irreparable loss to the cultural world. The work of the legendry singer acted as a direction for all those who strive to excel in the music world,� said veteran singer Khagen Mahanta, while reminiscing his association with Rameswar Pathak.

Mahanta pointed out that artistes like Pathak succeeds in making a global impact they strive for excellence in one genre of music unlike others who desires to acquaint too many things too early.

�He specialized in one genre of music and did wonders with it. His contribution, I feel, would continue to inspire the current and the future generation,� Mahanta said.

Singer JP Das, while offering his condolences to the bereaved family members of the icon, said, �I met him in the early 70's and was really inspired by his dedication and expertise. His works were path-breaking and I sincerely believe that there would be none who would match his quality.�

Popular singer Angarag Mahanta, said, �I came across him when I was very young. As he was close to my father (Khagen Mahanta), I got to know him better. It is a big loss to every music lover.�
