Teachers suspended over student�s suicide

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Sept 15 - Close on the heels of a HS first year student of Dhakuwakhona College committing suicide, the Principal and a professor of the institution has landed in a spot as the duo were suspended by the college governing body.

Dulen Chutiya, a student of Higher Secondary First Year (Science) committed suicide on Wednesday following awarding of punishment by the Principal and concerned professor over an alleged eve teasing incident.

Dulen was accused of teasing a girl student of the college for which Principal Dr Jogananda Sut and Professor Khanindra Das slapped him publicly and confiscated his identity card. Following the incident, the student returned to his rented house and hanged himself with a note asking for forgiveness from the Principal.

The incident obviously infuriated his fellow students, who then went to the Dhakuwakhona Police Station and demanded the Principal�s arrest. They gheraoed the police station till late in the night and dispersed only after police assured to look into their demand.

Alleging police complicity, the agitating students demonstrated by vandalising shops, Government offices and vehicles and blocked roads by burning tyres. Lakhimpur Deputy Commissioner Dr Jeevan B and Superintendent of Police Sudhakar Singh rushed to Dhakuwakhona to monitor the situation.

On Friday, Northern Range DIG Lachit Baruah visited Dhakuwakhona and assured the students of conducting proper investigation into the entire incident. He visited the victim�s home at Bhoma-Chutiagaon along with the DC and SP of Lakhimpur district. Later, an emergent meeting of the governing body of Dhakuwakhona College resolved to suspend Principal Dr Sut and Professor Khanindra Das.
