Teachers found absent

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, March 20 - The Lakhimpur Deputy Commissioner Barun Bhuyan conducted a surprise visit to a school on Saturday and found it to be closed as its teachers were absent. The DC visited Lathow MV School in Nowboicha, Lakhimpur on that day at 12 noon and found the school was closed. He learnt from the local public that there were only ten to twelve students enrolled in that school and attendance of teachers were not regular. On hearing of the visit by the Deputy Commissioner, three-four teachers came back to the school and told him that the school was closed early that day in order to bring text books from the Block Elementary Education Officer (BEEO)�s office in Nowbaoicha.

The Deputy Commissioner�s verification of the register of the school found that only eight students were enrolled in the Roll Book from Class I to Class V with no student from Class V to Class VII though it was an Middle Vernacular (MV) school. Bhuyan also found that the school has eight teachers in the Teachers' Attendance Register but the local public reported that only some teachers were attending school. He also had the information from the public, whose versions were video tapped, that two teachers namely Tikendrajit Baruah and Chandraprova Phukan regularly remain absent from school. The absent teachers used to sign their attendance through manipulation, the DC found in that visit to Lothow MV School. On that day both the teachers were found absent from their regular school duties as evident from the Teachers� Attendance Register.

The BEEO, Nowboicha, Arup Jyoti Bhuyan told the DC that due to the irregularity and indiscipline of these teachers, guardians of the locality had been refusing to send their children to Lothow MV School. The BEEO also told him that the matter had already been reported to the District Elementary Education Officer (DEEO), Lakhimpur for necessary action. After that, considering the seriousness of the matter and criminal negligence of the school teachers towards the education of the students of a Government. MV School, DC Barun Bhuyan asked the DEEO to suspend immediately the two teachers, namely Tikendrajit Baruah and Chandraprova Phukan who were reportedly found not attending the school regularly. Moreover, the DC also directed the DEEO to adjust the surplus teachers of Lathow MV School to some other schools where there is dearth of teachers.
