Teachers feted by Manipuri literary body

HAILAKANDI, March 17 � Seven headmasters and principals of different high and higher secondary schools of Hailakandi district were felicitated in the annual general conference of the district unit of the Manipuri Sahitya Parishad Assam at Madhavpur BLMC School.

The day-long programme held on the occasion started with the flag-hoisting ceremony. The vice president of the committee, Nanda Kumar Singha hoisted the flag. Later, a literary meet was conducted by Manindra Singha of Lala Rural College. Those who read out self-composed stories and poems included �Kavyabhusan� T Sanamacha Singha, �Sahityabhushan� N Dhananjoy Singha, Usharani Singha, Kanchanbala Singha, T Benubabu Singha, Subhram M Dev Kumar Singha, Vinod Bihari Singha, N Indra Singha and N Chaoba Singha.

A seminar on the ways to inspire students towards Manipuri medium schools was also in the agenda for the day. It was conducted by the Parishad�s district president M Nanda Kumar Singha. It was addressed by state president of the parishad, Th Benubabu Singha, K Birchandra Singha, Anil Kanta Sharma, K Chandrsekhar Singha, K Swapan Singha, L Lanbansana Singha among others.

All the speakers expressed serious concern over the lack of enrollment in the Manipuri medium schools and urged the parents to send their students to the vernacular schools. They lamented that the children of the Manipuri community are forgetting their mother tongue due to the extreme use of English language in all spheres of life. They held the view that English is necessary for the competitive purpose in the national and state level, but the learning of mother tongue is also equally important.

The seven felicitated school heads are Birchandra Singha of Purbakittarbond High School, L Jyotindra Singha of Nityanandapur High School, H Joykumar Singha of NT Model High School, K Chandrasekhar Singha of Sanarai Meitei High School, Anjan Luang of PK Girls� Higher Secondary School, K Jamuna Singha of Indrakumari Higher Sceondary School and Anjan Singha of Government Victoria Memorial Higher secondary School.
