Tea workers demand eviction of encroachers

By Staff correspondent

DIBRUGARH, March 1 - The tea garden workers of Bokel tea estate, Hatiali tea estate and Mottock tea estate in collaboration with Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS), Assam Tea Tribes Students Association (ATTSA) and Chah Jonogustiyo Jatiya Mancha on Monday staged a massive demonstration in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner here in protest against the failure of the district administration to evict encroachers from tea garden land.

The workers alleged that several tracts of tea garden land in several plantations have been illegally occupied by some unscrupulous people. The uncultivated lands within plantations have also been encroached, the protesting workers alleged. The protesters demanded that all illegal settlers be evicted and their houses demolished.

ATTSA leader Hemanta Oraon said that some outsiders are using money and political power to grab the tea garden land.

The protesters also called upon the Central government not to play politics over rations of the tea garden workers.
