DERGAON, Nov 13 - Considering the various job profiles available in the tea industry in present day, the Golaghat Commerce College has started a Postgraduate Diploma course in Tea Plantation Management (PDTM) from this year in collaboration with North Eastern Tea Association (NETA).
The inaugural ceremony, meant basically for the initiation of the fresher to the course, was organised in the college premises recently and the programme was chaired by the principal of the college Dr Jatindra Nath Saikia and moderated by the course co-ordinator Rajesh Jaiswal, associate professor of the college.
Delivering his speech as the chief guest, the vice-chairman of Indian Tea Board, Bidyananda Barkakoti exhorted the students to bring about a judicious synthesis of knowledge and skills and stressed the need for developing the art of articulation. Addressing the gathering, the chairman of NETA, Manoj Jallan expressed his gratitude to the principal of the college for accepting his proposal to introduce such a course in the college. He hoped that the course will go a long way in producing employable human resources particularly for the tea industry, which has been facing the dearth of such candidates for a long time.
The president of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) of NETA Sunil Jallan elaborated on the initiatives taken by NETA for opening up the course as a part of its CSR programmme and expressed his gratitude to the entire Golaghat Commerce College fraternity for converting the dream into a reality. The students were briefed about the course by the programme co-ordinator of the course as well as a faculty of the college Ranjit Majumdar. Among the students gathered Mridushmita Saikia, Meenakshi Borgohain, Babul Sonowal and Aditya Gogoi spoke on the occasion about their feelings and needs.
In his presidential speech Dr Jatindra Nath Saikia highlighted the unique opportunity of industry academia interaction offered by the course from which the students can reap the maximum benefit. He also contended that the PDTM course will offer the students an extended field that begins from the college campus and extends beyond it to 125 tea gardens owned by the members of NETA. He further maintained that the course will offer a rare opportunity for the students to learn from their prospective employees� integrity. The programme was also attended by various tea company owners Rakhi Saikia, the manager of Goranga Tea Estate and a member of NETA, Tapan Kumar Deka, agricultural officer at Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Golaghat of Assam Agricultural University (AAU) Ratul Chandra Neog along with faculty members of the college and a number of invitees from different walks of life. The programme ended with vote of thanks by Rajesh Jaiswal.
