TE doctor quits job citing �insecurity�

JORHAT, Sept 3 - In the wake of the lynching of a doctor of Teok Tea Estate on Saturday, a doctor of a tea garden under Mariani Revenue Circle of Titabar subdivision (Civil) of the district, has resigned from his job purportedly �feeling insecure� in discharge of his duty after killing of Dr Deben Dutta.

Jorhat Deputy Commissioner Roshni A Korati, when contacted, told The Assam Tribune this evening that the manager of the Hunwal Tea Estate verbally informed her today of Dr Nipun Karmakar resigning from his post of senior medical officer of the garden.

Korati said that the manager told her that Dr Karmakar put in his papers citing threat to his life in continuing in the post after the lynching incident at Teok TE.

The Deputy Commissioner said that the garden (Hunwal TE) has another doctor, who was working.

When asked about another doctor of a tea estate near the Teok Estate in Kakojan area too quitting, Korati said so far no information has been received by her in this regard.

The Deputy Commissioner further said that today she chaired a reconciliation meeting at her office chamber over the lockout issue of Teok TE, which entered its third day today.

She said the meeting attended by a senior manager of the garden, an agent of Amalgamated Plantations Private Limited, secretary ABITA (Zone II) Dr PP Sharma, Assistant Labour Commissioner, B Hazarika, Medical Inspector of Plantations Dr Apurba Sarmah, ACMS office-bearers of the district, discussed ways to lift the lockout.

Korati said that the management has sought an assurance from the workers of not indulging in violence in the future and never doing a repeat of the August 31 incident.

The DC said tomorrow the ACMS will be holding a meeting of all workers of the five divisions of the estate and discuss the matter. On Thursday, another round of reconciliation meeting is expected to be held under the aegis of the district administration to take a decision on lifting the lockout, the DC said.

8 more arrested: Meanwhile, police today further arrested 8 more persons in connection with the killing of the doctor and produced them before the court of Additional CJM, which sent them to judicial custody. The total number of arrested people went up to 30 today.

Minister, MLA visit: Keshab Mahanta, State Minister for Water Resources, Science and Technology, today along with Teok MLA Renupama Rajkhowa visited the residence of the deceased Dr Deben Dutta at Jogduwar in Teok and offered their condolences to the bereaved family members.
