By Correspondent

AIZAWL, Nov 24 - Tuberculosis (TB) has claimed the lives of 37 people in Mizoram this year, exceeding last years toll, an official source stated here today.

From January to September, 1,999 TB cases were detected in the State and 37 people died of the disease, the source said. Last year, TB claimed 29 lives in Mizoram. In 2018, the TB toll stood at 24.

Meanwhile, officials blamed lack of public awareness for the spurt in TB-related deaths this year. Moreover, 189 among the 1,996 TB-infected people also tested positive for HIV. As many as 139 TB patients detected this year have developed multi-drug resistance, indicating lack of awareness about TB treatment.
