Tarun Nagar residents demand proper drainage

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 18 Badly affected by the lack of civic amenities, the residents of Tarun Nagar area of Guwahati have asked the State government to take steps for constructing proper drainage system in the winter season to avoid flash floods during the monsoons.

The area, adjacent to the GS Road, witnesses worst of flashflood during rainy seasons. Lack of proper drainage and overflow in the Bharalu River add to the problems of the residents.

We have submitted several memorandums to the State government regarding the problems of the Tarun Nagar area. Unless steps are taken for regular de-siltation of the Bharalu River, it is not possible to solve the artificial flood problem of the area. During flashfloods, small pumps are installed to pump-out water from the area, which is hardly sufficient to solve the problem, Biswanath Das, a resident of the area said.

Moreover, the locality does not have good drainage system to ensure smooth water flow and that is why the area gets flooded even after a short spell of rain, he added.

Not just flash flood, shortage of street lights is also a major problem in our area. Though a few street-lights were installed recently, many by-lanes still do not have sufficient street lights. Moreover, due to lack of repairing and maintenance many of the existing lights are also lying defunct, another resident said.

Many by-lanes of the area, affected by water-logging need immediate repairing.

The residents are also affected by lack of regular conservancy service in the area. The local people have to pay Rs 70 to Rs 100 per month to the local NGOs for door-to-door waste collection.
