Target for completion of fence March, 2019: Centre

By Spl Correspondent

NEW DELHI, Aug 3 - The Centre on Wednesday said that the target date for completion of the ongoing fence work along the Indo-Bangladesh border is March, 2019. However, the agencies erecting the fence along the border in Tripura have been asked to complete the work at the earliest.

In a Rajya Sabha reply, Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju said that in 2006, the government had sanctioned the Phase-III project for replacement of the fence constructed under Phase-I. The Phase- III project is closed with effect from March, 2012.

Under Phase-I, a single row fence was constructed during 1986-2000. Later, it was observed that in many places, the border fencing constructed under Phase-I had exceeded its normal life and had become dilapidated due to weather conditions, rains, floods, etc. Accordingly, it was decided to replace the Phase-I fence with improved design for better security of the Indo-Bangladesh border.

The cost of Phase-I border roads and fence was Rs 1,049.36 crore, Phase-II border roads and fence was Rs 4,405.00 crore and Phase-III fence Rs 884.00 crore.
