Tai body demands Autonomous Council

SIVASAGAR, Oct 19 - The Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad Assam (TYPA) Central Committee through a demonstration in front of Sivasagar DC office today reiterated its demand for ST status to the Tai Ahom community and also autonomous council status in 36 upper Assam districts besides incorporating satellite zones in Nagaon, Morigaon, Kamrup and Biswanath districts.

The �districts� demanded to be included in the autonomous council are Sadiya, Margherita, Tinsukia, Digboi, Naharkatia, Tinghkong , Moran, Dibrugarh, Thowra, Duliajan, Sonari, Mahmora, Amguri, Nazira, Sivasagar, Teok, Jorhat, Mariani, Titabor, Khumtai, Golaghat, Bokakhat, Kaliabor, Jonai, Dhemaji, Dhakuakhana, Guwahati West, Naoboicha, Lakhimpur, Bihpuria, Gohpur, Chatiya, Dispur and Morigaon.

The release also said that the undivided Sivasagar and Lakhimpur districts, now divided into six districts, would be the mainland of the council. It also demanded six Lok Sabha seats i.e., Jorhat, Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Kaliabor and Nagaon in addition to three Rajya Sabha seats for the community. The demonstrators sent a memorandum to the Chief Minister also.

Hundreds of TYPA members raised anti-BJP slogans with traditional bells and drums and termed the Modi government at the Centre and the Sonowal government in the State as that of liars. Diganta Tamuli, joint secretary, TYPA Central committee, warned the government to grant ST status to the community before January 26 or face the consequences.

Among others who spoke were Suraj Dihingia, president, Sivasagar district committee, Haren Phukan, chief adviser, Nani Kumar Gogoi, Dipjyoti Duwora, Prasanta Gogoi, Ganesh Gogoi, Kamal Konwar, Ramen Gogoi, Dulal Barua, Dipok Chetia, Dilip Gogoi, Subhon Konwar, Asim Ranjan Buragohain, Ridip Gogoi, Bibekjyoti Gogoi, Subrata Borgohain and several other leaders from different districts.
