Sweltering heat pushes up sale of coconut water

By City Correspondent

GUWAHATI, Aug 4 - With the sweltering heat making life miserable in Guwahati city, demand for seasonal fruits and coconut water has risen manifold. The maximum temperature recorded in the city on Tuesday was 37 degree Celsius.

People were seen thronging stalls and kiosks selling fruit and coconut, resulting in a rise in sale. As the temperature in the city soared, several coconut water vendors said that they attended to at least 300 customer s daily in the last three days.

Sale is totally dependent on the weather. Due to the lockdown, sale of coconut water is not satisfactory this year. But after a surge in the temperature, I have managed to attend to around 270 customers a day in the last two days, a coconut seller in Panbazar area said.

Besides, many are going for carbonated drinks like lemon soda which are cheap but harmful to the human body.

Another coconut seller, Subul Hussain said, Last year 600 to 700 coconuts used to be sold in a single day. One coconut used to cost Rs 40 to Rs 50 depending on its size. Now there is limited supply of coconuts, so the price too has increased.

Subul added that the lockdown has affected business to a considerable extent.
