Swamp deer conservation prog at KNP

KOHORA, Nov 16 � The ONGC Ltd in collaboration with Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) launched here today an innovative conservation programme for the critically endangered sub-species of eastern swamp deer at Kaziranga National Park in presence of Dr BS Josyrilu, Basin Manager, ONGC and Dr PC Bhattacharya, Trustee of WTI.

The highly endangered eastern swamp deer at present numbers only 681, which is incidentally the highest figure in the world. The idea behind the programme is to assist Assam Forest department in long-term conservation of eastern swamp deer with a financial assistance of Rs 85 lakh.

Initially the project will be for a period of three years and if successful, then it will be extended in other protected areas also, said S Gopinath, GM (CSR) of ONGC.
