Swahid Piyali to be staged at Jorhat today

GUWAHATI, April 6 - Two prominent drama organisations of Assam � Tarajan Natya Sanmilan and Jorhat Natya Sangha � are going to jointly stage the play Swahid Piyali based on the life and struggle of the 19th century martyr Piyali Baruah, at the Sanmilan auditorium at Tarajan, Jorhat, from 7 pm tomorrow.

Many veteran as well as upcoming actors will play key roles in the drama that was written in the year 2005 by noted educationist, playwright and author Late Muktinath Sarma.

Directed by Diganta Baruah, the play will be dedicated to the memory of Late Lakshminath Sarma. It will be inaugurated by noted agricultural scientist Dr Tapan Dutta, who was also a former student of Late Muktinath Sarma. The music in the play will be directed by well-known singer Jayanta Nath. This was stated in a press release.

It may be noted that Piyali Baruah was hanged by the British along with Maniram Dewan on February 26, 1858, for trying to overthrow the British authorities and restore the Ahom kingdom.

There will be no entry fee for the play, stated the organisers, who have requested all lovers of art and culture to attend the programme and make it a grand success.
