GUWAHATI, Dec 9 - Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will honour the families of the martyrs of the Assam Movement at the �Shraddhanjali� programme tomorrow.
The event organised by the Department of Implementation of Assam Accord, Government of Assam, will get under way at the Khanapara Veterinary College playground at 11 am. Financial assistance will also be extended to the families of the martyrs in the function.
The All Assam Students� Union (AASU) will also be observing the occasion as Swahid Divas (Martyrs Day). The day will be observed centrally at the Nehru Park in the city from 9:30 am. Various units of the AASU will also observe the day across the State.
It was on December 10 in 1979 that Khargeswar Talukdar became the first martyr of the Assam Movement. Altogether 855 people embraced martyrdom and thousands others were injured during the movement (1979-1985) against illegal migration from Bangladesh.
The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) will observe the day as Swahid Divas all over the State, the central function being organised at the party headquarters at Ambari here.
Meanwhile, Governor Banwarilal Purohit recalled the supreme sacrifice of the martyrs of Assam Agitation on the eve of Swahid Divas today. In a message, the Governor said the 855 martyrs of Assam Agitation set an ideal example of love for the motherland.
