The Swahid Bedi has been built by the Guwahati Metropolitan Development in memory of the martyrs of the freedom struggle.

He regretted that even after attaining freedom, the problems of exploitation, discrimination, poverty, illiteracy and unemployment have been haunting the people of the country. It is the bounden duty of the people of the country to fight these problems out, he said. He also praised Nuruddin Ahmed, who built the altar.

Gogoi emphasised the need to ensure equal development of all sections of people for ushering in development.
