�Swachhata Shramdaan� programme held in city

GUWAHATI, Sept 16 - As part of the �Swachhata Hi Seva� campaign, over 200 persons participated in the �Swacchhata Shramdaan� at two locations along the banks of Brahmaputra in the city.

The drive was conducted opposite the Fancy Bazar at the Inland Water Transport site and along the Shukreshwar Road.

The participants cleaned the southern bank of the Brahmaputra. There were about 100 ex-servicemen in the teams of Commander Uday Sankar Barman and Col DC Kakati of the Directorate of Sainik Welfare Assam.

About 50 officials from the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, led by Dr AM Farooqi, the Head of Regional Outreach Bureau, participated in the drive at both the places. Another group of about 50 GMC workers and officials led by the executive engineers of the respective divisions also took part in these drives.

Local people were made aware of the necessity of cleanliness. Literature about dry and wet waste, waste segregation, disposal in the dustbins was also distributed among the people present at the sites. The school children were also briefed and motivated about the programme.

Kuldeep Singh Dhatwalia, Director General, North East Zone, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Monalisa Goswami, Commissioner, GMC and Brig ND Joshi, Director, Directorate of Sainik Welfare also participated in the cleanliness drives.

Terming the campaign a �janandolan� for �Swachhata�, Kuldeep Singh Dhatwalia said the offices of the Ministry of I&B in different States can be used by different agencies for promoting the cause in realising the vision of a clean India.

While taking part in the programme, Monalisa Goswami said, �We are organising this programme to increase awareness about �Swachhta Hi Seva��.

�In the coming week, several programmes will be organised by the GMC to create awareness about cleanliness. I hope we can make some important contributions towards the cleanliness of the bank of the Brahmaputra,� she said, adding that the local residents of Guwahati should also contribute towards the cause.

Brig ND Joshi said, �By inviting people to participate in the 'Swachhta Hi Seva' drive, the Swachhta Abhiyan has turned into a mass movement. With the citizens now becoming active participants in the cleanliness activities across the nation, the dream of a �Clean India�, once visualised by Mahatma Gandhi, has begun to get a shape.�

The Inter-Media Publicity Coordination Committee (IMPCC) had discussed the cleaning of the Brahmaputra and development and beautification of its banks in the city during its monthly meeting held on August 13 last. During the meeting, the participants had volunteered to organise a cleanliness programme on one of the Sundays.
