MANGALDAI, Sept 28 - In view of the ongoing country wide campaign of mass cleanliness drive Swacchata Hi Sewa campaign from September 17 to October 2, the district administration of Darrang has taken up the initiative to celebrate Durga Puja in a Swachha Puja manner.

The district administration has asked all the 184 registered puja committees of the district to use minimum plastic and thermocol during the puja celebration and to avoid noise or sound pollution. Addressing a press meet at the conference hall of the Deputy Commissioners office on Tuesday morning, Deputy Commissioner Ashok Kumar Barman said that this year the district administration has decided to select three best puja committees in the district to be awarded three prizes for maintaining cleanliness during the celebration. The criterion for the selection will be on the basis of the use of eco-friendly materials, use of bicolour dustbins, non-use of plastic and polythene materials and on the basis of the maintenance of discipline in all spheres.

The district administration has also urged all the puja committees to undertake a plantation programme during the celebrations. As per the decision taken by the State Government, there will be a dry day on the day of the Bijoya Dashami in the district. To make the Swachha Bharat campaign more effective and fruitful, the district administration has appealed to all the puja committees to take part in the clean campaign of the puja committees including the immersion ghats of the district. The district administration and the police have also decided to take a tough stand to check the flourishing business of illegal country liquor and unauthorised consumption of liquor in public places of the district.

Taking part in the press conference, Darrang SP, Sreejith Thiraviam apprised mediapersons of traffic arrangements in Mangaldai and Kharupetia towns and appealed to all sections of the society to extend cooperation and support to follow the new traffic arrangement to ensure safe and pleasant celebration of Durga Puja.
