GUWAHATI, June 18 MLA from Baghbar constituency Sherman Ali Ahmed may join the Congress party within next few months.
Ahmed, who was suspended from the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) last year, said that he will contest the 2016 polls and is confident of emerging victorious again.
On June 17, I held a meeting with the voters of my constituency where representatives from 19 panchayats and various blocks were present. The people supported my stand and gave me a free hand to decide on the future course of action, he said.
Asked if reports of his joining the Congress were true, he said refrained giving a direct reply and said, It might be the Congress or it might be some other party. I will decide soon. But one thing is for sure. I will not ask AIUDF to take me back into its fold and I will never join hands with communal forces like the BJP.
The MLA, however, said that he will wait for some more time before switching over to any party as elections are still a few months away and the anti-defection law is in place.
The voters of my constituency are with me and they know that the AIUDF betrayed the trust of the people. My suspension from AIUDF will not hurt me. Rather it will hurt the AIUDF, he said.
