Susmita alleges discrimination in NRC update

By Correspondent

SILCHAR, Oct 15 - In a meeting with the Registrar General of India, Congress MP from Silchar Susmita Dev has raised the issue of discrimination meted out to the Bengali-speaking population of the State during the upgradation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

During the discussion held at New Delhi recently, Susmita raised the issue of the basis of which citizens are categorised as Original Inhabitant (OI) and Non Original Inhabitant (NOI). The basis on which the categorisation is being done is discriminatory as it is drawing a clear line of divide between the Assamese and Bengali language speaking people in the State, Susmita informed the RGI seeking his intervention into the matter at the earliest.

On the other hand, the members of the Citizens Rights Preservation Committee (CRPC) Assam also met the RGI and highlighted the rampant anomalies in the ongoing process of upgradation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam.

Bidhayak Das Purakystha, general secretary of CRPC claimed that umpteen irregularities adorn the preparation of the NRC list especially with reference to the issue of Original Inhabitant (OI) Non Original Inhabitant (NOI).
