Survey reveals problems faced by todays youths

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Feb 26 With the changing socio-cultural and economic environment, lifestyle and moral obligations, the youth of today have also changed considerably, and many new concerns and challenges, which were absent a decade back, are surfacing in their lives.

The results of an all-India survey conducted by Indian Christian Youth Mission (ICYM) points out that the lack of basic infrastructure, finances, technology and exposure hinder the effectiveness of youth and their lives as a whole.

The results of the survey, conducted on 6,000 youths from across the country, were presented in the 29th plenary assembly of the Catholic Bishops Conference of India which began on February 24 at Don Bosco Institute, Guwahati.

The outcome of this survey would help the CBCI to form a catholic youth policy in future.

The survey highlighted some of the major concerns of youth in the country. The study points out that many young people are struggling with poverty, migration, lack of proper education facilities and gainful employment, social upheaval, political instability and environmental degradation, said Bishop Gerald Mathias, Bishop of Lucknow addressing the media today.

Their problems have been compounded in the context of economic globalization, and this calls for serious reflection, deliberation and timely action, he added.

The problems of the youth of the Northeast are same as youth from the other parts of the country. Moreover, the migration from one place to another in search of better education, work etc., makes them face the same set of problems like insecurity, social vulnerability, difficulty in adjustment among others, he further mentioned.

The survey, largely conducted among the catholic youth, has assessed the general trends among the young people of the country. While around 75 per cent of them have negative opinion about politics, 72 per cent lack political awareness. Similarly, 65 per cent youth agree that mental and emotional problem are on rise among youth, 69 per cent believe that youth engagement in acts of violence and crimes is on rise.

The survey also highlighted that more youth related activities and organizations should be established in order to listen to the genuine concerns of the young people. A special attention has to be given to differently-able youth in-order to bring them to the mainstream of society. In the multi-religious context of the country, it was felt that the youth must be motivated to be channels of inter-religious peace and harmony.
