GUWAHATI, Nov 16 - The State PWD is conducting a survey for an elevated road from Gauhati Club to Noonmati, a project that could turn out to be an engineering marvel.
Many portions of the 6-km stretch of road in the city are narrow, which causes frequent traffic congestion. Neither there is any scope to widen this vital route of the city.
We are exploring the possibility of an elevated road from Gauhati Club to Noonmati. Planning and survey works are in progress, after which we will rope in a consultant, a senior PWD official said.
According to the plan, one arm of the elevated road will connect RG Baruah Road.
Meanwhile, the foundation stone of the flyover at Sarabhati is likely to be laid this month.
The two-lane flyover will run from Rehabari to BBCI and will be around 700 metres in length. Around Rs 130 crore will be spent to build the flyover.
In addition to it, the PWD hopes to inaugurate the nine foot-overbridges with elevators in February.
The bridges are coming up near Vivanta by Taj, Kar Bhavan (Ganeshguri), Walford, near Mizoram Bhavan, Sukreshwar Temple, Kamakhya Gate, Boripara and Adabari.
All these bridges will have additional features, including elevators, lifts and staircases, the official said.
The existing foot-overbridge at Hanuman Mandir (Ulubari) is also being renovated with the additional features.
There will be generators for running the elevators and lifts. We plan to lease out the foot-overbridges to NGOs or other third parties for running them on self-sustainable mode. They will have advertisement rights, he added.
Each foot-overbridge is being built at a cost of around Rs 13 crore.
