Sunrise, AP Blues win opening matches

By Sports reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 2 Sunrise Athletic Club and Assam Police Blues moved forward in the 59th Bharat Ratna Lokapriya Bordoloi Trophy Football Tournament.

In two opening days matches at the Nehru Stadium here today, Sunrise earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory against spirited FCI Sports Club, while the policemen outshot NF Railway Sports Club by an aggregate of 6-4 goals in tie-breaker after playing a 1-1 draw.

Sunrise boys started the proceeding on a positive note and forged ahead in the 18th minute when Vikram Singhs power-packed drive bulged the FCI net (1-0). Babul Hasda diverted the ball into the net off a smart square pass from Ikwuagwa Enoch from the right wing (2-0).

But the FCI boys made a spirited comeback in the second session and made the Sunrise defenders run for their money with a series of well planned moves. Their midfielder David March Gayary was the main motivator as he set the ball for his frontliners with some accurate passes. They finally reduced the margin through substitute Rabindra Koch in the 61st minute (2-1).

Devid sent a wall pass and the third man Rabindra made a good run and put the ball in the goal keeping his cool.

In the remaining part of the match, the FCI players created several openings but the Sunrise defenders managed to contain them at the final zone.

The Police-Railways match was a mediocre one as both the teams hardly went all out in search of goals.

Manoj Boro scored for Police in the 18th minute, while Susanta Mazumdar restored parity in the 44th minute.

In the tie-breaker Manoj Boro, Munna Limbu, Rishikesh Medhi, Kajaigek Rongmai and Sarbananda Sonowal converted all the five kicks, while Janak Basumatary, Bijoy Das and T Joseph were the successful shooters for Railway. Susanta Mazumdar missed the first kick and the Railways need not take the fifth shot.
